THE BIG PICTURE
De Gouden Reael is established in an historic building dating back to the Dutch Golden Age (17th century). In the front gable you can see a golden gable stone, once placed by the infuential and powerful Reael family, the first owners of the structure. Right behind the entrance you will find the cafĂ© and the bar. Right after that you will pass the open kitchen, go up a staircase and then you’ll find yourself in the cosy restaurant, with good views outside and to the bar below. Behind a thick curtain there is a separate room suitable for groups (max. 20 persons).

The Gouden Reael indeed has a rich history. There is even a dutch novel by the same name written by a famous dutch writer, Jan Mens. But there is more… One of the first city-photographers ever, known by the name of Jacob Olie, was born on the Zandhoek in 1840, just three doors away from De Gouden Reael. It is in this neighbourhood that he took his first pictures ever. He and his photographs would later become famous the world over. His photo’s generate a unique impression of 19th century Amsterdam.

Below you’ll find a small selection of images. But don’t hesitate and come and see for yourself!
